J & Lind's Denim Love

$

If MangoRed didn't share this with us, I'd think these photos were a series of ads for a denim brand. Except they are way better in terms of execution. The whole set feels gritty and pretty at the same time. It's as if they decided to just pack up and leave, and declare, to hell with everything else.
They have love. That's enough.

I'd also call this prenup shoot super cool but calling them cool seems uncool. So let's just all stare at them *cool* kids in their leather and denims while they smoke and ride them fancy cars.

Jan's Bridal Style - Flower Power

$

This is probably the third time that we've featured a Midori Moon Bride and there seems to be a commonality -- they all have such an effortless bridal style that's just so unique and charming.

<Photography by Midori Moon>

Rebelliousness takes forms in so many ways. What makes Jan's style rebellious is that her wedding just had two cohesive elements---flowers and color. Sometimes that's all you really need. With all the hulabaloo about all the other frou frou in a wedding, careful editing and a little bit of restrain takes a lot of guts. And that's what we loved about Jan's style.

Rex & Joanne's Rad Day

I can stare at these entourage gowns forever! Thank you Rebel Bride Joanne, for bringing your refreshing, rad ideas to the world!

<Photography by ProudRad>

Marc Santos and Al Avellana of ProudRad are doing preeeeettty well if you ask us. For a relatively new company as ProudRad (but of course they've been in the industry far longer than that), they've taken the world by storm that only a few can ever dream of. What with the Maleficent shoot going viral last year with features from Huffington Post, Elite Daily, Yahoo! just to name a few and now w/ the Aiza and Liza wedding being featured in CNN, we can expect great things to come from this dynamic duo for sure. And  I only need to see Rex and Joanne's RAD wedding to convince me of that. They say that you can tell a compelling story with just a few visuals--and in this case, we only had to see 10 rebelliously lovely photos from their wedding to fall in love with it. Bold patterns, interesting pieces, and laid back love. ProudRad tells the love story of Joanne and Rex, so eloquently well.

Oh Valentino, Let Me Count The Ways...

$

I long for the day when brides didn't have to be boxed into thinking that a bridal gown just has to be white, or that it can only be beaded in swarovski cyrstals for it to be "bridal", or that it generally has look a certain way. After all, there are all kinds of personalities and there are all kinds of love that can be interpreted endlessly. The Valentino Spring 2015 Haute Couture presentation is a testimony to that. Inspired by quotes from Shakespeare, Inferno, and the artist March Chagall, Valentino spoke of love that made you feel like you were fluttering on a cloud, a love that made you want to go through hell and back again, a love that made you wish on rainbows, a love that had a story that can be uniquely your own. If I could get married again, and if money was not an issue I would rather go for a gown like this---a gown that had so much more to express other than it coming from a famous label.

Bridal looks can go beyond just the superficial fashion, and we hope this inspires you to express yourself in truthful, colorful ways devoid of what others may say against you.

Cuba in Manila

Metrophoto has changed the game for engagement photos. Not just in Manila but even for the rest of the world. I mean who freakin' hires on-cam talents just to stage a story? Who does that?!? Oly will do everything he can to evolve the craft--to remold wedding photography in a way that moves his couples to do crazy things--rebellious things, if you think about it. To be completely honest my husband and I never had a prenup during our time--because we thought it was soooo cheesy and we didn't think it was necessary. Now if these crazy ideas of Oly were already available 5 years ago, maybe we would have considered--especially my husband. Because apart from Metrophoto's badass prenup "evolution" what makes it even more unique is the fact that it makes the grooms cool and manly. And that's something that always seems so awkward with some of the usual prenup shoots--it makes the guys feel silly and it makes them feel secondary. Oly never does that. He meticulously and thoughtfully celebrates both the bride AND the groom.

Metrophoto was able to magnify Jazz and Archie's love with so much color, passion, and life. The result is a story of a couple, as vibrant as a mash-up of Cuba and Manila.

Oly shares:

It took a long while before Jazz could commit to book us for her wedding. She had seen the photos, she had met us, but she tried to fight it for months on. Personally I knew she was one, also extremely pretty and super sweet and I wanted them to book me but it wasn’t up to me. Until one day I get this text message from her “Hi Oly, I called your secretary this morning and booked our wedding and prenup with you. It’s you! It’s always been you!” Imagine a scene from a movie – it felt somehow like that to me. haha. You see, there is no use resisting who you really are, you just have to let go.

And let go was what Jazz and Archie did. They let us suggest a few of our ideas for their pre-wedding shoot and we let them choose which one they liked the most. They said they wanted the most complicated concept and we all jumped in and took the challenge. This was no easy shoot to do, we didn’t want to deal with the usual locations, we didn’t want to see overused props, but we also didn’t want to overdo it. We were bringing Cuba to Manila. I must say that Jazz and Archie was the perfect couple to execute this kind of shoot, they embraced the entire concept, did whatever it took, and they looked absolutely beautiful.

Bike About Town

There was something about Jessica and Darrel's prenup that reminded me so much of Portlandia--they literally look like they would fit right into the show.
<Photography by Rockin' Photographers>

Rebellious Bride Jessica shares:

Darrel and I are total opposites, he is pretty much inclined in the arts being an interior designer and in music as a musician while I am a bookworm and a former debate team captain who is not that interested in arts and in music.

Even though we came from totally different backgrounds, we share the same passion for bikes. That's why having bikes in our prenup shoot was a must for us since it played a vital role in our 6 year old relationship.

On the day of the shoot, Darrel and I decided to call that day our "FAVORITES DAY"--bringing all our favorite things that we wanted to use in the photo shoot. We brought along our favorite clothes, shoes, of course our favorite bikes, Darrel's favorite musical instruments, my ukulele and my favorite camera. That day, we just had a lot of fun biking while our photographers captured our typical Sunday chill-out afternoon bike ride.

Five Fun Details from April & JC's 12-13-14 Wedding

$

Being a Filipino-Chinese, April & JC's family were surprised by the couple's decision to get married on the 13th. But with "12-13-14" being the last consecutive date in this lifetime, they wanted to celebrate that with a bang. Here are five of the funnest details from April & JC's wedding!

<Photography by Paolo Feliciano>

1. Purses for Flower Girls instead of Baskets - Rebellious Bride April shares: "THINGS WE LOVE was actually the theme of our wedding. Since I love Kate Spade, with the help of Kit Mandac of Ava's Cakes and Events, she came up with beautiful purses for flower girls instead of the usual baskets. Something new and something so pretty for my cute flower girls. Aside from that I also got them fuchsia pink sparkly ballet shoes to match their dresses."

2. Kate Spade inspired Wedding Cake - RB April shares:
"I really didn't want a huge cake. Let's be practical. So we had 2 layers of fondant cake with 23k edible gold with sugar peonies (my favorite). I fondly call it The Cute Wedding Cake!"

3. The Born on the Fourth of July / Tom Cruise Bridal Car - What can be more rebellious than having a family heirloom/Hollywood prop as your bridal car?!? The car was owned by the groom's grandfather and was used during the filming of Tom Cruise's movie Born on the Fourth of July when they shot in Laoag. How cool is that! RB April Shares: "The 1949 Chevy Fleetline Deluxe was restored by JC and his brother for almost 2 years. JC waited for it to finish until we can finally start to plan for our wedding.

Here's a clip from the actual movie!

4. The Ilocos Postnup: Immediately after the wedding, the couple celebrated all the most beautiful sights in Ilocos Norte for the postnup pictorials. They are absolutely gorgeous!

5. Choosing an "unlucky" number - And finally, RB April has this to share about their infamous wedding date: "When we announced to our family and friends our upcoming wedding, we  got the same reactions from them which is, "Why 13???" Being born and raised as a Filipino-Chinese, most of them were expecting our wedding date to be 8, 10, 18, 20 or maybe 30 (too common for us). We didn't consult anyone from our families--I mean who cares, it's our wedding anyway and it's the last consecutive date any of us will see in our lifetime so we figured, why not spend it with someone you wanted to be with for the rest of your life."

Congratulations April & JP! And may your marriage be this adventurous and fun as your wedding!

A couple of months ago,BuzzFeed came up with an article entitled "21 Secrets Your Wedding Photographer Wants You to Know." This interesting feature introduced me to the works of  Belfast-based photographers, This Modern Love. I was instantly smitten with their work. Here are the top 12 awesome photos from their Buzzfeed feature (including the one above).

In The Mood For Love

It's seriously getting harder and harder keeping up with the ProudRad Boys.  I mean SERIOUSLY guys, stop it because our blog is already being monopolized by your rad weddings!

Oh my goodness Leo & Che's wedding is just oooooozing with rebelliousness. From the short bridal gown, to the Paddington-esque flower girl styling with the cute coat and boots (or is that pretty girl a little bride?), to the drool-worthy TippingPointCollective styling, that Gideon Hermosa bouquet, and the cohesiveness of all the pops of red that reminds me of the movie In The Mood for Love. My, my, we wish there would be more weddings like this to go around.

We've never really felt the February season kick-in 'till we saw this wedding.

MangoRed - Sarah & Banjo

Nowadays, not all brides would be patient enough to sift through a photographer's entire portfolio. Heck, there are brides who don't even appreciate and distinguish the difference between good and bad photography! Not me though. When I was wedding planning, I meticulously went through each and every album of the 3 photographers that I shortlisted. And there was jut something about MangoRed that I just totally identified with. To us, they will forever be the "Ultimate Rebellious Gang."

Join us as we look back at some of MangoRed's most awesome sets starting off with Sarah and Banjo's engagement and wedding which were both AGES ago. But as you can see, their love story was perfectly captured in a time capsule that is still so relevant today.

Simply put, MangoRed is  probably the only fruity dudes out there that just never goes rotten.

Philippine Wedding Trends: Celebration or Show Off?

$
0

*Guest Blogger Monique De Jesus shares with us her thoughts on whether Philippine weddings have become so taxing to the point of losing out on what truly matters when you are about to marry the love of your life.

Before we share with you Monique's insightful blog on this subject, we'd like to weigh-in on the topic (if you have your own thoughts on this as well, feel free to leave it at the comments part below). We do agree with a lot of the things that Monique discussed about Philippine Weddings but we have this to add:

A Rebellious Bride should be able to make her own decisions--always remember that relatives, friends, forums, blogs, magazines, wedding expos, and suppliers can suggest all they want for your wedding but a Rebellious Bride is strong enough to form her own decisions, create her own wedding based on her own personality and her grooms. It's not about showing off but should be about celebrating one of the most special days of your lifetime.

A Rebellious Bride should absorb all the wedding ideas like a sponge but would not feel like she needs to do everything. A Rebellious Bride should be able to decide on her wedding essentials based on what she wants to do and not because something is "on-trend." Spend within your means but don't also scrimp on timeless investments that will last a lifetime. A wedding video/Same-day-Edit for instance, is not supposed to be included in a wedding just because it feels like a "requirement" --you get a wedding video and invest on it because that's the only thing that can immortalize your big day that you can watch and re-watch 'till you're 70. And there's nothing wrong with spending a little bit extra for that --again, not because it's "expected" but because you believe that it's truly an important element.  At the end of the day, if you are about to get married, the assumption is that YOU ARE A GROWN WOMAN. Nobody should be able to pressure you. And if somebody's pressuring you, we're here for you.

And so without further adieu, here is Monique's blog entry:

I have always envisioned my wedding to be intimate, surrounded by closest friends and family, perky, light, happy. When I started planning for our wedding months ago, I found myself overwhelmed by all the elements that are expected in a wedding here. Of course, I've been to several weddings before and even then I know that wedding trends here have just gone above and beyond what the essentials are. It felt like Filipina brides undergo peer pressure and this pushes them to put together this typical modern Filipino wedding - which is way beyond simple, by the way.

My mom would always tell me, you do not need to have lots of money in order to get married. Thinking of what a typical wedding here is, that's impossible! But I know what she meant - what is a wedding for anyway? Go define it yourself.

Other than the church, the typical suppliers couples book for their weddings are: caterer, events place, hair & make up artist, hotel for preps, band, florist, stylist, couture, photographer, videographer, bridal car, cake designer, event coordinator, souvenir supplier, photobooth, mobile bar, etc, etc, etc. And then you have the pre-nup pictorial, save-the-date video, same-day-edit / SDE video, wedding film, wedding documentary, and all these stuff wherein photo and video suppliers can get the most out of your pocket. Kaching! All of these equate to a minimum of half a million bucks, and counting.

Is this difficult to pull off a simple wedding with all these trends nowadays? I guess we are afraid we will be judged if we do not adhere to the typical wedding set up. Hundred bucks per invitation card? Sure! Expensive bridal car to fit your theme? Okay! 100k worth of photo and video coverage to document the most special day of your lives? Totally worth it! - Or is it? If money is not a concern, lucky you. But if it is, think twice. Selling a property, getting a loan, sacrificing more important necessities just to have your so-called "dream wedding"? Think of the very reason you are getting married - to begin a married life. And what more would be left to begin a married life if the savings accounts are just all drained because of the wedding expenses? Let alone if you need to pay for the loan you got just to pay for the wedding. Not cool. Better re-assess that your goal is not just to show off.

Years ago, these SDEs, save the date's, pre-nup shoots, didn't exist. Now it's like a sin not to have them. Same with not getting a hotel for preps or not having a custom-made couture bridal gown. I bet they'd call you cheap. They'd think you don't have the budget. But really, who are they to judge?

You know, one of the perks of only having people that really matter to you on your wedding day is having no pressure of being judged. These people love you. These people should understand you and know that this day is a celebration of your love as a couple. These people are happy for you, and they only want to see you happy. They will celebrate with you no matter the venue, no matter the food, no matter what. This is the kind of people worth having on your big day.

Where do this pressure really come from?

 Suppliers

Of course, suppliers are running businesses. They will surely do everything to sell. They will make you think you NEED to have their products or services on your wedding even if you don't really do. It's called Marketing yes?

Wedding Expos

Wedding Expos or Wedding Fairs is a business trend that is growing so fast in the country nowadays. It's crazy how couples respond so well to these expos. How could we not? All kinds of wedding suppliers can be found here and it's truly a wonderland for soon-to-wed couples. Suppliers here oftentimes offer promotions exclusive only to that particular wedding expo. You can only avail of it if you book them during the fair. But does that give you enough time to research on their outputs and customer feedback? Do you really need what they offer? So far I have booked only one supplier through an expo, and that supplier I am sure of. We didn't just saw them there and decide. In an upcoming expo I am planning to book another particular supplier. See, I am taking advantage of these expos - by getting discounts and freebies I wouldn't usually get if I book my suppliers outside of it, not the expo taking advantage of me.

 Wedding Forums

There are several forums you can participate in and they are just so helpful for bride-to-be's like me in looking for good suppliers and valuable feedback about anything concerning a wedding. The forum participants become your best friends. They support you, help you, understand your every concern as a bride. You all share the same goal which is to pull off a wedding you have envisioned of since you were a little girl.

I am following a certain forum and I find it really helpful. However, sometimes I find myself slipping into the abyss of peer pressure interacting with co-members and reading all of the topics' posts. And I would remind myself about the true purpose of our wedding - it's a celebration of our love, together with God and the people who are part of our lives. Again, it's really how you would use these forums as a tool to help you find information and feedback that you need, not the forums manipulating you.

 Friends

You're on your mid or late 20s and people around you are getting married one by one. You witnessed their wedding planning and you're part of their wedding day. This process is one that can really shape your mind of the concept of an ideal wedding, heck it's what you see, taste, feel, smell, hear. It's reality. Your friends who got married had the same experience, on top of what they learned from the forums, suppliers and wedding expos. And it's a cycle that goes on and on and on - shaping the concept of an acceptable wedding in the country and giving opportunities to businesses that thrive in this wedding industry.

At the end of the day, the couple has the last say. I admire couples for truly knowing what their wedding is for, and for not getting brainwashed and pressured by these trends, by not merely joining the bandwagon.

Remember, planning for your own wedding can make you vulnerable. It is a very special day that will happen only once and you want to make it as perfect as possible. We all do. But this vulnerability is what the wedding suppliers use to allure you into paying for more than what you really need for your wedding. Set a goal. Know what you want. My goal? Feel the love on my wedding day, from my groom and from the people who shared that special day with us. Dance the night away. Be merry. Guests be dead drunk. Everyone just happy.

This is not just about cutting on cost, but realizing what the true essence of the wedding day is and not getting lost in the maze of material obsession. It is a celebration, not a mere event show off after all. ♡

Rebelry at Thirty

Rebellious Makeup Artist Toni Rodriguez shares her own wedding/bridal vision through her fabulous 30th birthday photo sesh.
<Photography by Raphael Yu>

Every year, Toni has a portrait session done for her birthday (what a great idea!). For her big 3-0, she wanted it to be extra special and thought of bringing her own wedding ideas to life. Toni shares that makeup artists usually just follow the vision of the bride and the wedding photographer so this time around she wanted to be able to show to everyone her own ideas outside of makeup artistry.

Rebel wedding artist Toni shares:

I usually ask my good friend/photographer Rap Yu  to immortalize me through photos each year during my birthday. For my 30th, I wanted a shoot that reflects how I feel and where I am at thirty .

I've been in the wedding industry for quite some time now and had painted countless faces of brides. I've seen so many bridal shots and I've always wanted to try something else for them but really couldn't do it since wedding photographers always have the call and not the makeup artist. So this time, I wanted to execute my bridal look that I always wanted to try for my clients but never really had a chance since we usually have the "typical" bridal look or poses that we mostly see during their big day.

The gowns that Von Lazaro made for me perfectly fit like a glove, choosing each and everything that I wore is his gift for me during this shoot. A woman’s figure is sacred to Von for he knows how to accentuate and respect each nook and cranny of the body. My favorite gown amongst the 3 is actually the one with the peplum skirt. It's probably something I would wear on my wedding someday - not the expected bridal gown we usually see.

For my look I basically wanted the not-so-bridal updo or the one side, half pony hair down so I asked James Nualla to give me a messy "big hair, don't care"'do. For the set design, throwing fur on the floor and murdering the flower garden were his vision to achieve "simplicity is beauty".

There was no better choice for my photographer other than the young and talented Raphael Yu since he is a fashion photographer and haven't been exposed to wedding shoots yet, so I knew he wouldn't make me do the "typical" bridal poses.

I hope to inspire some brides to be more adventurous and more open with new ideas with this birthday shoot we did. :)

Happy birthday Toni! We loved what you did for your birthday shoot and it is indeed a refreshing idea to see the vision of other wedding artists for a change!

'Till We're Seventy

When your much-awaited "best wedding ever" has been done, when you stow away your wedding gown, never to be worn again (sometimes not just because there's no other event to use it but also because you can't fit in it anymore), and your babies become the center of your universe, a couple can only hope and pray that yes, indeed they will be together 'till they are old and wrinkly. I absolutely love and connect with this video on so many levels. It reminds me so much of how my husband and I watch and re-watch our wedding video during our anniversaries where Jason was kind enough to leave a clip of our vows as part of our DVD features. It reminds me of my own parents who get high from using their senior citizen cards during our Sunday lunches and how they go on movie dates every week. It reminds me of my peg: the old couple from the Titanic movie--of growing old and leaving the world together with the one you love.

Watch Jayne and Jami's beautiful and inspiring wedding film by Jason Magbanua below and tell us if you feel the same way too!

Jayne and Jami: Same Day Edit from Jason Magbanua on Vimeo.

It's been seven years since I started watching Jason's wedding films in-between office breaks (and then making my teammates watch it after). Seven years of having butterflies in my stomach, feeling emotional watching complete strangers' weddings as if I'm a guest, and now he's celebrating 15 years in the business...still making love stories that just connects with everybody's hearts and guts.

All Kinds Of Love

When I saw this Bench campaign along EDSA, I instantly thought it was the most amazing Valentine/Love campaign ever made and thought I'd blog about it. This VDAY campaign aims to celebrate all kinds of love--love for family (Film icon Gloria Romero and her grandson), love for your bf/gf (newly engaged couple Solenn Heussaf and Nico Bolzico), and of same love relationships (bfs Vince Uy and Nino Gaddi and gfs Ana Paredes and Carla Pena).

But even before I could post this feature, I've just found out that the photo of Preview Creative Director Vince Uy and his boyfriend Nino Gaddi's was allegedly censored by the ASC. Now, the beautiful billboard allegedly looks like this:

Source: Facebook

We have not been able to verify if this censorship is true or if the photo above wasn't just edited but regardless of whether this is real or not, nobody should  even remotely think of doing something as absurd as this. To the perpetrators, did you really think that this high-horse stupidity wouldn't be biting you in the arse? Haven't we all learned by now that Filipinos do revenge through social media like warriors?

Can we all just please enjoy a campaign without any drama? At the end of the day, we are just fighting, appreciating, and celebrating  LOVE.  #PAINTTHEIRHANDSBACK

There were a lot of celebrity weddings during the Valentine weekend. But the most rebellious, most refreshing of all I would have to say, is Yeng Constantino's wedding to her now hubby Yan. OMG that heart-shaped ceremony was just AMAZEBALLS.

Gideon Hermosa shares: "Something simple yet meaningful for our #YengYanWedding today. Composed of 607,000 mini hearts that represents the number of days (607) since they became officially lovers. The ombre wooden planks along the aisle tells their love story."

And didn't Yeng channel Elsa (Frozen) for her rebellious bridal look? What a cool bride! Congrats Yeng and Yan! You guys rock!

Cinderella's Wedding Gown is REBELLIOUS!

First came Maleficent, and then we have Cinderella. I love that Disney is recognizing the fact that the generation now is more contemporary and more rebellious. And Cinderella's non-white, non-traditional printed wedding gown is a testimony to that.

Costume Designer Sandy Powell says that she wanted the looks in the movie to be"bold and have an explosion of color as if it were a picture book." --and we're so glad that she did.

We loooove Cinderella's wedding gown and we hope that this will finally cement the approval for non-white bridal gowns.
